There are many educational uses for blogs. I found this image for those of us that are visual learners that shows how students and instructors can use blogs specific to their needs.

1.) Class Administration Blog for communicating information about a course or specific topics.

2.) Provide instructional tips for students.

3.) Collecting student assignments via a blog

4.) Discipline specific feeds for one's field to get current events and research in an area.

5.) Personal journal

This image shares the following ways for students to use blogs:

1.) Blogs for coursework class dialogue, or compiling information from an instructor

2.) Journals or papers for assessment

3.) E-portfolio for projects, papers, and references

I also found a slideshow with a dozen different uses for blogs in the classroom available at http://www.slideshare.net/sqoolmaster/educational-uses-of-blogs-and-tags-234136. Some of the ideas include: a reader's response journal, comment on daily news, or respond to a morning message, showcase student created project-based learning projects online, online book club, post a reaction to a video, lesson, or lecture, pen pals in other locations, post a collection of story starters, post a collection of activities for early finishers, create a newsletter, or store student photography.

One of the easiest ways I think to use start using a blog in the classroom would be to communicate with parents and community stakeholders on what is going on in the classroom. Students could summarize what they did at the end of each day, or at the end of a week, or completed unit. For younger students, students could dictate to the teacher to type, or the older students who can write could contribute to the posting.
